South east London town to get giant screens, outdoor dining and live events

This follows Royal Greenwich Council securing funding of up to £100,000 from the Mayor of London’s Summer Streets programme, which supports 15 projects across the capital.

General Gordon Square, Beresford Square and Powis Street will all be transformed under the scheme, which aims to boost footfall, support hospitality businesses and encourage residents and visitors to spend time in town centres.

Sir Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, said: “I’m delighted that we’re working with boroughs and local businesses to bring al fresco dining, live music, events and later opening hours to streets across our capital.

“From Woolwich to Willesden Green, Finsbury Park to Feltham, and right in the heart of the capital in Waterloo, this investment will create new outdoor spaces, support local businesses and give Londoners and visitors even more reasons to get out and enjoy our city.”

As one of four boroughs to receive a major grant of up to £100,000, Royal Borough of Greenwich will use the grant to deliver al fresco dining areas, screenings of sporting events, live performances, extended opening hours and markets.

Councillor Asli Mohammed, the council’s cabinet member for economy, town centres and co-operatives, said the programme would have a positive impact.

Cllr Mohammed said: “Summer Streets will give a real boost to Woolwich’s economy, with increased footfall, extended opening hours and more outdoor seating.

“We will soon be decking out the town centre in Summer Streets style and it’s great to see so many local businesses getting behind this campaign.

“From world cuisine to Woolwich Carnival, it’s going to be a summer to remember.”

Sir Sadiq said the programme builds on the success of last year’s inaugural Summer Streets scheme, which led to higher footfall and increased revenue in participating neighbourhoods.

This year’s funding aims to help councils create vibrant, welcoming outdoor spaces throughout the warmer months, while offering direct support to local businesses.

The announcement comes as new strategic licensing powers are introduced, giving City Hall a greater role in shaping licensing decisions across London.
