Shopping in West London
West London still loves its boutiques and small, owner-run shops, from the vintage, brocante and High Fidelity-style vinyl stores north of Notting Hill Gate to the 60 or so serious antiques shops lining Kensington Church Street. At No 28, that Seraphine, the French maternity-wear shop that hit the headlines when the Duchess of Cambridge wore one of its understated designs - she is now wearing them again.
Prosperous Holland Park is the perfect setting for classy little jewel boxes of clothes shops – from Virginia’s (vintage, very classy, don’t even think of turning up without an appointment) in 98 Portland Road to The Cross, which often stocks intriguing new UK designers – at Clarendon Cross. You can gloat over your purchases at old trouper Julie’s Wine Bar afterwards.
Kensington High Street has long since left its grungy 1960s roots behind to become a manageable-sized Oxford Street, with all the high street names. Notting Hill Gate, despite its fame, is still endearingly tatty, with second-hand clothes and vinyl shops that have been there for decades. Westbourne Grove, on the other hand, loves brands, especially upmarket ones, such as Smythson the stationers or Emma Hope’s Shoes.
On the corner of Westbourne Grove and Queensway is the successfully revived Whiteleys, once the area’s biggest department stores, which now has shops, a day spa and a multiplex cinema. Westfield London, which opened with great hoopla in 2008 at White City, only to be trumped by the one in Stratford. The giant mall, with cinemas, restaurants, shops and parking all under one roof, has changed the desolate north-east edge of Shepherd’s Bush Green for the better. Find luxury labels and classical music in The Village and high-street brands in the rest.
West One sits at the heart of the West End, home to the best in retail and entertainment. Located between the iconic Selfridges and the renowned Oxford Circus, West One truly is the gateway to London. 2017 will see a completely revamped and refurbished West One, with the high quality interiors and facilities. Come and explore the exciting commercial opportunities that will evolve with this space.
